| Several years ago, I heard a story about a poor Italian family who was immigrating to the Unites States via a passenger ship. Like most immigrants at the time, this family barely had enough money to chase their dream; their on-board lodgings were cramped, traveled with all of their possessions, and barely brought enough food for the 2-week transoceanic journey to a new life.
Most of the family members were timid and satisfied to remain in the lower bowels of the ship. They shared their breads, salamis, and cheeses and excitedly discussed what their future had in store. One of the children, a mischievous boy named Giovanni, decided to explore the ship as a prelude to his American adventure. An hour later, he returned to the lower decks beaming and with a noticeable coat of chocolate smothering his otherwise innocent face.
"Sei Pazzo! You're crazy!", his mother exclaimed. "I cannot believe you stole some chocolate. They are going to throw us overboard!"
"But..but...", Giovanni stammered.
"Basta! Enough!" Now go, and don't get into any more trouble!"
Another hour passed, and this time Giovanni returned, wearing that same broad smile and carrying an armful of succulent oranges, apples, and bananas. Giovanni's mother exploded like Mt. Vesuvius.
"Oh no! Oh no!!" she shrieked. "Giovanni, prossimo qui! Come here!" She harshly grabbed his arm, bent him over her knee, and was about to teach him a lesson of a lifetime when he looked up at her and pleaded,
"Aspetta! Aspetta! Wait! Wait! The food, Mama, the food.....it comes with the passenger ticket! It all comes with the ticket!!!"
It comes with the ticket. Much like this story, how many times in your personal or professional life were you surprised by implicit benefits or requirements? Do you, like Giovanni, characteristically seek out these intangibles to fully appreciate each situation? Or are you like Giovanni's mother, reticent and reserved where actions and decisions are based upon presumption?
Membership to PMI and the PMI Space Coast Chapter offers a vast array of benefits that may not be immediately evident. This goes beyond the transparency of networking with the 338 Space Coast Chapter members, getting discounts to training seminars, or regularly receiving project management literature in the mail. At the PMI Global level, valuable benefits that may not be realized include:
At the local level, the PMI Space Coast Chapter affords benefits best appreciated by active participation:
- Volunteering opportunities through corporate, community, and academic outreach programs which promote leadership development, personal enrichment, and enhanced credibility
- Regular attendance at Chapter meetings to learn about Space Coast Chapter projects Regional activities designed to advance the profession, as well as hear nationally recognized speakers
- Access to the PMI Space Coast Chapter web-site for exclusive member downloads and information as we launch new initiatives this year focused on professional development, career advancement, and community outreach
- Direct feedback mechanisms to any of the Space Coast Board members so that we can address your recommendations and concerns in a timely fashion and make your involvement a rewarding experience
I encourage everyone to regularly visit both the PMI and PMI Space Coast websites and make use of the membership resources available. Also, whether it is with the PMI organization or any other personal or professional dealing, check that ticket: you may not know what you are missing!
