Closing the Weekend Hunger Gap: PMISC Packs 2,140 Meals with The Children’s Hunger Project

Chapter Life

There’s a special kind of energy that happens when purpose meets process. This week, several PMISC members — myself included — rolled up our sleeves at The Children’s Hunger Project to pack weekend food packages for Brevard County kids. Shoulder‑to‑shoulder with volunteers from across the community, we assembled 2,140 food packages — each one a small but mighty promise that a child won’t have to choose between hunger and hope.

Here’s why this work matters so deeply: 60% of Brevard County students qualify for free or reduced lunch. During the school week, they can count on breakfast and lunch. But when Friday afternoon arrives, many head into a weekend where food is uncertain. Teachers and administrators know exactly who will return on Monday tired, hungry, and unable to focus. The Children’s Hunger Project steps into that critical gap, sending kids home with weekend food packages so they can come back to class ready to learn.

As project leaders, we think in terms of throughput, quality, and outcomes — and we saw all three on display. The event ran like a well‑oiled operation: stations designed for flow, roles clear, quality checks built in, and a cadence that turned good intentions into tangible impact. It was community service with a Gantt‑chart heart.

What I loved most? Watching strangers become teammates in minutes. Smiles, high‑fives, and a friendly race against the clock to push the count higher. We left with tired feet and full hearts — and a reminder that small, well‑executed actions at scale change lives.
